AIM OF RIVERS SOS: We call on the NSW government to mandate a safety zone of at least 1 kilometre around all rivers in the state, to protect them from further permanent damage through the effects of mining under, or too close to, river beds.'

BARRINGTON-GLOUCESTER-STROUD
PRESERVATION ALLIANCE INC.

The Johnson Creek Conservation Group was the first organisation to try to oppose coal mining in our area. The Save the Barrington Tops Group has protested about ruby mining in fragile and valuable parts of the Barrington Tops.

When mining exploration licenses spread rapidly over all the best farming land, the river systems, valued tourist areas and privately owned residential areas, the Gloucester Environment Group called a series of public meetings which resulted in the establishment of the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance. http://bgsp-alliance.asn.au/

BACKGROUND on Goulburn River National Park -
Goulburn River National Park extends along approximately 90 kilometres of the Goulburn River as it winds between sandstone cliffs honeycombed with caves in the Upper Hunter Valley NSW.. Stretching from Sandy Hollow in the east to near Ulan in the west it covers over 70,161 hectares and contains an impressive diversity of both inland and coastal flora and fauna.

Located within the traditional lands occupied by Aboriginal people of the Wiradjurie, Gamileroi and Wonnarua language groups this river valley is believed to be a major trading route between people of the coast and the western plains. The area is of considerable contemporary significance to local Aboriginal people. Many of the sites are sandstone shelters decorated with hand stencils. There are also open campsites, quarries, axe-grinding grooves, and scarred trees.

Due to the area's significant natural and cultural values it was reserved for national park in 1983.
